Unsung heroes in a wide variety of dishes, Spanish cucumbers (pepinos) are wonderfully flavorful, crisp and refreshing.
Also, thanks to the mild climate in Andalusia (where the vast majority of Spanish cucumbers are cultivated) and innovative growing techniques, cucumbers are available nearly year-round in Spain, resulting in an annual cucumber harvest of around 740 thousand tons, or more than 25% of all European cucumber production.
Exports of Spanish cucumbers are also significant, and growing steadily. In 2014, Spain exported approximately 570 thousand tons of cucumbers, representing nearly a half billion euros in sales.
