I just enjoyed my first cocido madrileño of the season, the beginning of what I hope will be a hearty and wonderful fall and winter in the company of many a delicious Spanish stew.

Savory broth, flavorful garbanzos, tender beef and vegetables, smokey meat and other traditional ingredients found in cocido… all wonderful harbingers of the approaching cold weather.

Despite the fact that the famed, annual Ruta del Cocido Madrileño doesn’t usually kick off until the beginning of the new year, there are plenty of restaurants in the Spanish capital that feature this warming winter stew on their menus, including classics like La Bola, Casa Carola and Taberna La Daniela.
