If you love food, idolize Spanish chef Ferrán Adrià and fantasize about what it might have been like to work in his three Michelin star restaurant – which arguably continues to be one of the most famous in the world, despite the fact that it has been closed since 2011 – then Lisa Abend‘s book, The Sorcerer’s Apprentices: A Season in the kitchen at Ferrán Adrià’s elBulli (Free Press, 2001), is the one for you.

This fascinating read follows the experiences of the stagiaires, or apprentices, that filled the kitchen of Adrià’s restaurant year after year.

To write it, its author, noted journalist and writer Lisa Abend, spent the 2009 season in the kitchen of elBulli, observing these young, ambitious chefs first-hand, while getting an intimate look at the inner-workings of this incredible establishment.
