Chirimoya, Cherimoya, Custard Apple, Ice Cream Fruit… any way you look at it, this subtropical fruit has got enough seductive and enticing names to make any other fruit downright jealous.

Despite its exotic airs, this fruit plays an integral part in Spain’s role as a key producer and/or exporter of a huge range of fruits and vegetables. In fact, Spain is the world’s largest producer of chirimoyas, with their production epicenter concentrated in Granada’s Río Verde Valley, the only tropical valley in Europe.

It is here that Protected Designation of Origin (PDO) Chirimoya de la Costa Tropical de Granada-Málaga finds its meaning, amidst the vast fields of this treasured fruit, which requires careful hand cultivation, and has flavors reminiscent of bananas and pineapples, with a creamy texture.
