The Basque town of Getaria, located in the province of Guipuzcoa, may be small, but it has a lot to offer visitors in terms of culture, gastronomy, landscapes and other things.
Not only is it located along the rocky and picturesque coast of the Bay of Biscay, but this town is also the location of the stunning Balenciaga Museum, which has an exhaustive exhibition of this world-famous Spanish designer’s work.
It is also the home to the famed Spanish restaurant Elkano, known for its traditional Basque food, and particularly its excellent preparation of rodaballo, or turbot.
Tomorrow marks another big day for this town, with the celebration of the anniversary of the return of Spanish explorer Juan Sebastián de Elkano, who sailed the world with explorer Fernando de Magallanes in the 15th century.
This celebration is held every four years in the town’s harbor with a multitudinous celebration that includes a reenactment of this famous sailor’s return to his home town. So if your in the area, make sure to check it out!
